Episode 75 - Sabbath

We’re coming back to finish our conversation about sabbath! What does God mean when we are commanded to “keep the sabbath holy?” Are we just supposed to sit and stare at a wall? Can we push an elevator button? We’ll explore all these questions and more as we try to capture a faith-filled understanding of sabbath.

We’re also saying goodbye to co-host Katie Phillips in the coming week so send your favorite Katie moments (narwhals and all!) in to beyondsundaypodcast@gmail.com.

Episode 74 - Faith and Reparations

Recently the Texas Diocese of the Episcopal Church has authorized money to be paid as reparations for the church’s historical role in slavery in the United States. This week on Beyond Sunday we’re asking how the modern church should respond to historical sins and what impact that should have on our individual and corporate faith. We know that this is a difficult topic for many and feel as though we are intentionally creating division. The hope of the Beyond Sunday team is that we can use this conversation as a launching point to talk about important issues of our time regardless of what we might believe. Send us your thoughts and comments at beyondsundaypodcast@gmail.com.

Episode 73 - The National Prayer Breakfast

Recently, religious and political leaders gathered in Washington D.C. for the National Prayer Breakfast. At this event there were two very different perspectives presented on how we treat those who we consider (or who openly claim to be) our enemies. This week the Beyond Sunday Team is joining the fray to ask the question as old as humanity itself, “How do we treat people who wish to do us harm?” We hope you’ll join the conversation on our Facebook page and let us know what it means for you to “love you enemies.”

Episode 72 - Is Religion a Mental Health Disorder?

We’re taking some time to talk about a country that is not actually covered in ice: Iceland! Recently, the Icelandic government came out with a variety of broad sweeps preventing religious people (including Christians) from entering certain public spaces and and even designating religious involvement as a sign of a mental disorder. You won’t be surprised to hear that the Beyond Sunday team disagrees with their assessment. But stick around and let us know what you think. (If this is crazy we don’t want to be sane!)

Episode 71 - Does Your Church Need Older People? (Spoiler: Yes!)

Patrick and Pastor David are without supervision in the studio this week, so buckle up and come along for the ride. We’re talking about a church that asked all of its older members to leave and contemplating the dangers of “fake news.” You can hear all of our Superbowl half time show predictions (and then send us a comment to let us know if we were right!) and of course, easily the most disturbing story of a tapeworm that you will hear this week. We hope you’ll enjoy this conversation as we continue to take our faith Beyond Sunday mornings and into the world.

Episode 70- Burnout

Whatever you might have heard about burnout before the Beyond Sunday team wants to explore what burnout looks like in our spiritual life. We’re taking a look at an article by friend of the Podcast Pastor David Hansen who is a ministry consultant for Lead. Whether you find yourself in professional ministry or not our spiritual health affects every aspect of our existence and we hope this conversation opens a window to a new view of our faith.

Episode 67 - Preach it!

Do you think your pastor preaches too long? Not long enough? Just right? We’ll be taking a look at a new survey that examines sermon length and topic across denominations. We hope you enjoy the new content as we ring in 2020 (which, as Pastor David helps us remember, is the end of the last decade not the start of a new one).
